Great Escape who's with me...

Anyone got any idea how i can avoid X-factor etc?

It's a serious question, it's started to get me really down every where I go they seem to pop up. The deeply repellent jungle thing is back with it's tedious tawdry carnival of media coverage. For example I turned on Radio 5 for some news etc. just now and they have an entire section discussing IACGMOH in length including a lengthy clip and interview with the creepy David Vanday from Dollar (I turned off quickly). But it goes on I was listening to Radcliffe and Macorni and even they end up playing the Susan Boyle version of "wild horses" does this record need any more airtime when you think of all the other music that's never been played even once.
But there's no escape I was on a job website the other day and there a horribly badly written advert with "do you have the X-factor" in the title this was for a job as finance officer with a council.

I was at social gathering the other day and basically most of the conversation I was on the edge of was based around this sort tv (that and teenage TV vampires) and in fairly intense way almost spoddy way.

Don't get me wrong I'm not expecting everyone to have the same interests as me far from  it and I'm more than happy for people to like whatever they like but why does everyone have to go on on on on about all the time oh FFS adam and joe have just started to discuss Cheryl Cole.gggggggggggrrrrrrrrrrrr!!!

God knows but if you do find out can you tell me? Even Radio 4 isn't free of it - I've heard twice a supposedly psychological appraisal of the vampire thing on women's hour. It's all pretty obvious what it's all about anyway... and none of them are as good as vintage Buffy...

The twilight thing is not quite as bad. Our Head of english enjoyed the books and its good to see lots of girls reading them (in the same way that Harry potter encouraged alot of teenage readers but I know you haven't read those either.

However at one point I found endless reference on this and other blogs and programs to Master chef tedious as I didn't watch that.

One man's cutting edge journey through the emotional ups and downs of celebrity reality TV is another man's over blown idea of a waste of an hour.

Increasingly I am becoming a fan Why don't you just switch off the TV and go and do something less boring instead?

as you al I've no problem with kids reading waht you like but these vampire fans where well out of their teenage years and it was the earnestness that they talked with that was alarming . It would have been like adults when we kids discussing the minutiae of Grange Hill and the hotness of gripper stepson.
I take you point about masterchef but it's the way that xfactor spills over into everything else that annoys. If you don't wnat to hear me wittering on about mc fine but it's not on the "Today" programme or in the editotials of most papers.
In the end I read my book and listened to the radio.

Oh MC appears on Breakfast TV and regularly on Radio 2, along with the apprentice which is another one that spills everywhere.

And good on you for turning the TV off.

re earnestness

I take your point on that as the earnest aging Harry Potter fans are also worrying. Maybe its obsession with things we don't get that is the worrying thing?

I was listening to a bit of Radio 2 in the car a couple of weeks ago and a really lovely choon came on. I turned it up, thoroughly enjoyed it and was astonished when the announcer said 'that was Susan Boyle'. And I still like it even now I know who it is.

Liz with regards to Susan Boyle my point was where it's good or bad rather than the way the media just has no balance. i'm sure if you heard her songs every so often they would be fine . It's the way the media kicks the hell out of anything it latches onto. Look at how Elbow or sigor ros pop up on programmes all the time until whatever magic they had is extinguished. Also considering how many plays wild horses will get why not give that air time on the rad mac show to some band who hasn't had 15 hours of primetime tv promotion and adverts in between corrie.
